View Concert Grand Harps.

The Lyon & Healy carved-top mandolin family strikes me as being composed of super-refined versions. How is this carved and braced? - almost the same as a Gibson mandola from the same time - but thinner and lighter and with a little more nuance. How does it sound?

- like a good Gibson mandola that's even better. The back and sides are all heavily-flamed maple instead of birch, too, and the whole instrument exudes 'high class violin.' The fancy scrolled headstock with its top-mounted tuners is just icing on that cake. The high-grade L&H mandolins are rare enough (though the are not too rare), but mandolas like this one are even harder to find.

This one came waltzing in with a local customer, who carried it in a beat-up old tenor banjo case. I was truly surprised to see this pop out of it. It looked ding-dang clean, too, until I saw the severe punched-in area under the tailpiece. Fortunately that was the worst of it aside from a couple interior glue drips and a detached main brace.Work included fixing that brace, installing a rosewood 'helper block cleat' over the cracked-up area near the endblock, giving it a fret level/dress, and setting it up.

The bridge is compensated for 2-wound, 2-plain strings (and I looked back in to see the original catalog drawings which also show that compensation - usually mandolas are compensated for 3-wound, 1-plain), so that's what I strung it with - 40w, 26w, 16, 11 gauges - like a heavier mandolin set. It's tonally and structurally happy with the tension of this set, but I think it could be bumped a gauge to 42w, 28w, 17, 12 as I tuned it up to DAEB above standard CGDA with the strings on it and it seemed just fine.

For auction today is another classic soprano ukulele. A Lyon& Healy Washburn Model 701 from 1922. Chicago-built, it features a mahogany neck and body, three-ply laminated sides, a 17-fret rosewood fingerboard with pearl dot inlays, and the characteristic L&H'smile' bridge of the period. Nut and saddle are both ebony. Decorations include an ivorine diamond inlaid in the headstock, white celluloid binding around the top and back, white celluloid heel cap, and a raised circle of white celluloid around the sound hole. The tuners are original and work well. Its overall length is 21' scale length 13-1/2' body length 9-1/2' and the width at the widest point is 6-7/16' Action at the 12th fret, G string, is 4/32' The sound is typical of aged mahogany: rich and warm with a big midrange.

And nice sustain. Strung with New Nylguts from Aquila, it's an exceptionally easy player- really a wonderful instrument. A note on the date: Model 701 was made from 1922 through 1925. Starting sometime in 1922 they had serial or batch numbers stamped either on the neck block or the top edge of the headstock.

The earliest models have a three digit headstock stamp starting with 7XX indicating the style number and no stamped serial or batch numbers. See Pleijsier, Washburn Prewar Instrument Styles(Centerstream. 2008) page 209. That describes this instrument, which has only the model number'701' stamped on the back of the headstock(see photo 8) I therefore estimate that it was made in 1922, before further numbering began. For a general description of this model see Pleijsier, page 217. CONDITION: Generally the condition is very good.

There is are two repaired back cracks. Cleated and glued(see photo 4) and a chip replaced on the bridge, between the E and A strings(see photo. There are various scuffs and marks consistent with play and age, but overall the finish is nice. NEWBIES: If you have a zero feedback score. No problem- bid away- but please contact me.

For auction is this classic soprano ukulele. A Lyon& Healy Washburn Model 700 from 1923 or'24. Chicago-built, it features a mahogany neck and body, three-ply laminated sides, a 17-fret rosewood fingerboard with pearl dot inlays, a raised mahogany sound hole ring, and the characteristic L&H'smile' bridge of the period.

Nut and saddle are both ebony. The tuners are original and work well. Its overall length is 21' scale length 13-3/4' body length 9-1/2' and the width at the widest point is 6-7/16' Action at the 12th fret, G string, is 4/32' The L&H 700 series ukuleles were nice-sounding instruments. And this one is typical: rich and warm with excellent midrange, crisp highs, good volume and projection. Strung with New Nylguts from Aquila, it's a sweet player. A note on the date. On the reverse of the headstock is a stamped.

Two-letter code'UF' which identifies this as Model 700. See Pleijsier, Washburn Prewar Instrument Styles(Centerstream. 2008) page 219.

Model 700 was manufactured from 1922 through 1925. The serial numbers from that period range from 0 to the low 4,000s. The serial number here is 2163(see photo 11) which is in the middle of that range, so I estimate that the instrument was made in 1923 or'24. CONDITION: There is are two repaired top cracks. Cleated and glued(see photos 2, 9, right of bridge) one repaired back crack, also cleated and glued(see photo 4, right lower bout) two chips replaced on the bridge, between the E and A strings(see photo 9) and the upper 1/3 of the soundhole ring has been replaced with new mahogany(see photo 12) There's some enlargement of the bridge slots, so I pass the strings through clear plastic beads to anchor them. See photo 9) There are various scuffs and marks, and some play wear on either side of the fingerboard extension, but overall the finish is nice. Also, there's a tiny amount of glue squeeze-out where the neck joins the body, suggesting that the neck may.

Washburn Ukulele by Lyon and Healy This vintage uke is stamped Washburn on the back of the peghead and Lyon and Healy inside the soundhole. The neck block is ink stamped'2014. It was made in Chicago in the mid to late 1920's. The model number is 5316. The Collegian Model. It's much better than the average uke of its day, with a 17 fret fingerboard and a raised tonehole ring.

The neck, top and back are solid figured mahogany with matching laminated sides, rosewood fingerboard and ebony nut and saddle. The action is good and the intonation is excellent all the way up the perfectly flat neck.

The original tuning pegs turn smoothly and hold their position. There is a small amount of top wear by the treble side of the fingerboard and a very flush, well-repaired crack on the back(see photos) There is no fret wear. An excellent sounding. Reliable instrument that competes admirably with the finer ukes of today.

If you are looking for a very special instrument or gift for somone special. This unique1925 ukulele is a real'find. From our father's extensive private collection. A beautiful fancy tropical wood ukulele from Lyon& Healy. It features an ivoroid bound body. Washburn's patented'smile' bridge with bone saddle and delicately carved celluloid bridgepins; bone nut and pearl dot inlay in Brazilian rosewood 17 fret fingerboard.

Celluloid kite inlay in headstock. Even when new, this was an expensive instrument. Overall length is 21 in. Wide at lower bout, and 2 1/4. Scale length is 13 3/4 in. 349 mm) Width of nut is 1 3/8 in. 35 mm) This is a consummate player's instrument.

Being a professional musician. Dad was very critical of an instruments intonation, tone, and sustain. This ukulele excels in all three areas.

It has been well played, but remains an exceptional professional caliber collector's instrument. The pictures show it was well loved, and received outstanding care.

The gold leaf oak leaves. Acorns and branches across the lower bout show light signs of rub-wear, and the original lacquer finish has opaque discoloring and is spider-webbing- savvy players and collectors know it often indicates great vintage tone- And this instrument does have wonderful vintage tone! No structural or bracing issues whatsoever.

The neck is straight and secure. The frets are dressed and nicely polished. Original hi-quality tuners have stunning veined ivory buttons. And provide smooth accurate tuning. The fully funtioning original hard shell case pictured is included. WE GUARANTEE YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED! A private party family liquidating our parents estate.

Ebony fretboard which I had radius-ed and the tiny frets replaced by some larger banjo frets and the extension scooped.

I bought it used for $950 and put over $300 worth of work into it. I saw one of these recently at a respected music shop in Sonoma going for over a grand without all the mod's and upgrades this one has. Woody, sound. Not as chimey as Eastman ovals I've played but considerably louder.

It has more of a classic oval sound.A cut above the usual import. Made in the same factory that was putting out the best MIJ Fenders, the quality and craftsmanship is incredible. It sounds great for classical and jazz, I used it in a swing trio. In great condition aside from a small hole on the bottom. Side where the missing pick guard used to go. On the back of the neck where it joins the body it looks like it might be separating from the body, I had my professional luthier check it out when he set it up and he assures me its not neck separation and purely cosmetic. A sweet sounding mandolin and a cut above the usual pacrim instruments.

Taken from a book on Washburn history: A short lived reissue of the late-teens early 20's Lyon& Healy Style B was available for a short time in the early 80's. Built with carved tops and backs. Called the Country Mandolin, the M7SW had a higher(model) number than the Jethro Burns models only because all the other numbers were being used. This is not to suggest that they were not nicely designed, having the two point asymetrical body shape of the old Washburn/Lyon&Healy A' and B's, and the sytlish peghead of the old B's and C's.

The black binding and oval soundhole also reached back to the 20's as did the solid spruce and book matched solid maple. The sales flyer for this model lists as features: Country Mandolin M-7SW Original extended cutaway design Hand carved solid spruce top Ebony fingerboard with pearl.

Here’s an outstanding example of the Lyon& Healy Shrine Ukulele. Model 5330, circa 1928. Chicago-made, it has a triangular mahogany body, three-ply laminated sides, mahogany neck, 17-fret rosewood fingerboard with four green celluloid dots at frets 5, 7, 10 and 12. There's a green celluloid nut and heel cap, rosewood headstock overlay with inlaid green ivorine square, mahogany gondala-shaped bridge with green celluloid saddle and white bridge pins, and the top, back and sound hole are all bound with green celluloid. The tuners are original and work perfectly; the strings are new Martin M600 Clear Fluorocarbons. Soprano-sized, the scale is 13-3/4' The original hard case is included, and in good condition. The sound is sweet and round.

Typical of old mahogany; intonation, projection and sustain are all excellent. This is an outstanding instrument. CONDITION: Pretty much as it came from the factory. A few marks in the finish. Most of which can be buffed out(by an expert! Since the finish is otherwise in great shape.

This one seems to have lived most of its life in its case. NEWBIES: If you have a zero feedback score. No problem- bid away- but please contact me by e-mail first, or I will have to cancel your bid. SHIPPING: I ship to the U.S. Hawaii, Alaska and U.S.

Travel back in time with this vintage ukulele. Though it is labelled Wurlitzer. It was made by Lyon& Healy and is similar, if not the same, as the Washburn model 1715(which was also made by Lyon& Healy) The model ID comes from the great braintrust at the Ukulele Underground forum. This little uke is in very very nice condition. It seems to be all original, including the gorgeous hard shell case. The case is missing the key and the two fabric lid ties, which prevent the lid from opening too wide, are torn.

Someone etched the date 2/14/27 in the back of the headstock, in partially Roman script(II/14/II7) as well as the initials E.M.N. And the word ME. I wish I could tell you that it was a Valentine's Day gift(2/14 is February 14 is Valentine's Day) 88 years ago from sweetheart to sweetheart, but the guy I got it from doesn't. The uke had been in his family for something like generations, but the initials E.M.N.

Aren't in his family tree. The uke had been passed down for a couple generations, but his children didn't want it. So, their loss is our gain.

Very nice binding on top and back. Very nice sound hole binding. Friction tuners.

Except for that etching on the back of the headstock, the uke is in near showcase, if not showcase, condition. The case, too, is in very nice condition. The action is not fabulous, about 6/32' at the 12th fret, but I think that's how it was made. The neck is straight, the top is flat, the neck plane into the top is straight and flat.

The neck heel is very firmly attached with no separation. There is a quite reasonable reserve on the listing, so I have every reason to believe that it will sell. It will be well-wrapped in new 1/2' bubble wrap for shipping. Please check out my Ebay store, the 1970 Time Travel Trailer, for more cool vintage stuff, including a bunch of vintage instruments, especially guitars, ukes, and banjos(and, soon, a 1920 Martin 0-21 guitar I got from the same guy). Travel back in time with this vintage soprano ukulele. It is the famous Lyon& Healy bell uke. Stamped Washburn on the back of the headstock, along with the serial number 5325(can anyone translate that serial number for me?

Lyon Healy 40 String Lever Harp

And Patent Applied For. The Lyon& Healy stamp is on the inside back.

This is a player uke, not a museum piece. It has been much played and is fair, but playable, condition. There is wear all over the edges of the headstock, especially the edges. The neck has been reset(prior to me) but the angle is correct.

There is glue squeeze-out at the neck heel. There were two long cracks in the back; I had my repair guy(the masterful Mr. Russell Shaw of Yellow Springs, Ohio) glue the cracks and put four cleats on the inside of each crack to stabilize the back.

There was also a crack on the lower side of the top, next. To the bridge. That crack too has been glued and cleated. The 12th fret was missing when I got it.

Russell put in a new fret there that is a decent, but not perfect, match. There is general wear all over the top, sides and back.

The four bridge pins are replacement pins, made of ebony. The top and back both have good binding. All that said, it sounds fabulous. Just crisp and tight.

It comes with the lovely original bell-shaped case(try finding another one of those! That just as cute as the dickens. As you know, these are famous ukes. In excellent condition, they sell for, what, something like $2,000. If you bid on this one, you'll be getting one that you won't be afraid to take out and play.

Lyon & Healy Mandolin

It came from the John McCardle Collection. McCardle is a noted instrument collector in Indianapolis, Indiana, who recently liquidated his fine and vast collection.

A General Motor public relations man by trade, McCardle was an avid collector and clarinetist, playing in Indianapolis polka and ragtime bands, and even consulting with the Smithsonian Institute on antique clarinets. The bulk of his collection was brass and woodwinds, with a few stray string instruments. This is one of said. Really cool old Lyon& Healy Camp Uke. You don't see these every day. Made in 1935.

The top has a couple of cracks but they don't haven't bothered me any. The Uke plays wonderfully and everyone I show it to says they have either never seen one in person and most say they have never seen one at all. Round Nissa Wood body with black binding and the back is very figured and much more beautiful than the photos. Here's your chance to own a piece of'Uke History' And the price is right! Call or text me at 502–407–2494 if you have any questions.

I have 100% positive feedback so buy with confidence. Thank you and happy bidding!
